Strategy Projects At Nanyang (SPAN) is an educational collaboration between industry partners and Nanyang Business School. With SPAN, MBA participants will have a unique opportunity to work with organisations on live strategy consulting projects.

SPAN is a core, capstone course that encourages Nanyang MBA participants to apply the latest business thinking and insights to analyse market opportunities and address business challenges of our sponsor organisations.

Diverse Nanyang MBA teams conduct research and analysis to come up with realistic recommendations for partner sponsors, with guidance from partner sponsors, faculty supervisors and instructors.

Lim Beng-Chong

Beng-Chong is an Associate Professor in the Division of Strategy, Management and Organization at Nanyang Business School. He has taught many courses including Research Methods, Leadership, Organisational Behaviour and Team Development at the Masters and Ph.D. levels.

Beng-Chong’s research interests include team effectiveness, decision making and sense-making, social network analysis, and more recently, psychological well-being and resilience.

Over the years, Beng-Chong has published in numerous international journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, the Journal of Organisational Behaviour, Organisation Research Methods, the Academy of Management Journal, Organisational Dynamics, Personnel Psychology, and the Human Resource Management Review, and most recently in Science. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Singapore Psychological Society and the Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology.

He received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from University of Maryland, USA.

Ulrike Marianne Murfett

Ulrike is a senior lecturer in communication management at the Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University. She joined in January 2006 and was appointed Head of the Communication Management Group in 2008. Ulrike develops and teaches communication management programmes at both undergraduate and graduate levels and won the Nanyang Business School’s Teacher-of-the-Year Award in 2010. In March 2011, she received the University’s highest recognition for outstanding achievements in teaching, the Nanyang Award for Excellence in Teaching.

She and her colleagues ensure that the communication courses offered at the Nanyang Business School remain pedagogically and technologically cutting-edge, so that the MBA participants and undergraduate students receive the best possible preparation for the communication challenges they will encounter in the global work place. Ulrike is also in charge of and teaches the communication management module of the SAF-NTU Academy’s master’s programme for SAF and international officers.

Ulrike has a M.A. from the Karl-Franzens Universität, Graz, Austria. She also holds a Cert. TESL accreditation from RSA, London.

David Yew

David is Director of Strategy Projects At Nanyang (SPAN), and a senior lecturer of Strategy, Management & Organisation at the Nanyang Business School, where he leads strategy consulting, leadership communication, negotiation and persuasion courses on the MBA, eMBA, Nanyang Fellows, and undergraduate programmes. He also teaches military officers at the Singapore Armed Forces Goh Keng Swee Command Staff College on leadership management communication, and consults with industry on strategy and executive opportunities.

David has 18 years of experience as a business owner, senior strategy consultant, and business analyst, providing customised and focused strategic, tactical and operational advice for companies looking to grow and expand in the Asia-Pacific region. David has advised numerous Fortune 500 companies across a variety of industries. His proven expertise includes market opportunity analysis for entry and expansion, sales and marketing consultancy, partner evaluation and selection, and planning and managing methodologies and analyses in all areas of business consulting and research from project design to strategy recommendations. Prior to heading the Asia-Pacific operations of a New York-based analyst firm, David was a partner at a strategy consulting firm where he sold his shares in a takeover, after successfully setting up, developing and growing its practices across Asia-Pacific and Japan. Some of his earlier working experiences included leading an Asia-Pacific analyst team at a Boston-based analyst firm, running start-up strategy consulting and research businesses, and consulting with one of Europe’s largest multinational firms.

David topped his BA degree course with distinction, and holds a MBA from the Melbourne Business School.

Timeline:

Starting in the first trimester, and working in diverse, cross-functional teams of 4 to 6 members, MBA participants spend 30 to 40 weeks, from conceptualisation to execution under the guidance of a faculty professor, developing innovative yet practical solutions to address challenges and issues and also assessing opportunities for businesses and organisations.
